Physicochemical properties of silicone sealant

Silicone sealant is an ointment-like material that cures into a tough, rubber-like solid upon contact with moisture in the air. Silicone sealants are primarily categorized into acetoxy, alkoxy, amine, and oxime types.

 

Silicone sealants exhibit excellent resistance to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, weathering, and temperature extremes; their Si–O backbone is resistant to UV degradation. They retain good elasticity at low temperatures (-50°C) and do not easily soften or degrade at high temperatures (200°C). One-component silicone sealants cure by absorbing moisture from the air, whereas two-component sealants cure through a chemical reaction triggered by mixing the two components.
