Warm-Edge Spacers For Insulating Glass: Do You Really Know Them?
First, it is worth noting that "warm-edge spacers" for insulating glass have a surprisingly long history, having first appeared back in 1950. Currently, the most common sealing technology on the market is the second-generation spacer system. This technology not only provides structural support and separation for the glass panes but also works in tandem with desiccants and sealants to create a complete, airtight sealing system. This effectively resolves common issues such as moisture ingress, poor sealing performance, and short service life. It really is quite an impressive innovation, isn't it?
As insulating glass assembly technology has advanced, the materials used for spacers have also improved significantly. Beyond traditional aluminum spacers, most spacers on the market today qualify as "warm-edge spacers"-a name that certainly sounds inviting. According to international standards, a warm-edge spacer must have a thermal transmission value (thermal conductivity factor) of 0.007 or less. In contrast, standard aluminum spacers have a thermal conductivity factor of 0.112, and ordinary stainless steel spacers have even higher values; consequently, both are classified as "cold-edge spacers."
In reality, any spacer that meets international standards can be classified as a warm-edge spacer, regardless of the manufacturing process or material used. Let's take a look at some common types. The first is made of thermoplastic material; while it offers much lower moisture permeability and thermal conductivity than aluminum spacers, its higher cost has limited its widespread adoption in the door and window industry so far. The second type combines polypropylene with stainless steel; this is currently the most common warm-edge spacer used in residential doors and windows. Finally, there are spacers made from fiberglass-reinforced composite materials combined with non-metallic composite films; these are frequently found in products from medium-to-large-scale door and window manufacturers.
